Sitting in the front passenger-seat of the minibus, she cast a sidelong glance at the driver. Benedict looked positively brimming with health and vitality, his rugged features somehow more relaxed. She couldn't see the expression in his eyes as he was wearing dark glasses, but, by the upward curve of his lips, he was a man content with the world.
Rebecca was loath to admit it, but it was a relief to have someone else drive. She had not relished the thought of doing it all herself.
'Why the frown, Rebecca?' The softly voiced question caught her unawares. 'Is it such a hardship to be in my company?
Her full lips curved up in a smile. 'No, nothing like that; in fact I was just thinking how lucky we are to have you along. I like driving, but it's good to have a break,' she replied truthfully.
'I'm sorry Miss Smythe hurt her hand, but her loss is my gain, so I'm not complaining.' He turned his attention back to the road, adding wryly, 'Except about the dilapidated state of this vehicle. It amazes me you managed to drive it from England.'
'It's perfectly all right, only a bit old; it needs gentling along, that's all,' she defended.
He shot her a cheeky grin. 'Like me.'
She turned and looked out of the window, warmed by his achingly familiar grin but determined not to respond. It would be all too easy to fall for his practised charm, and that was the road to hell, she knew, to her cost. She was a mature adult, she told herself, and had more sense than to make the same mistake twice.
As they drew nearer to their destination Benedict explained the history behind the making of cognac. All along the roadside were the vineyards and invitations to sample the wines that were eventually blended to make cognac. Brandy made anywhere else in the world was not allowed to call itself cognac.
When they finally pulled up in the centre of town, the children who had been half-hearted about the trip were now raring to go. Benedict had fired their imagination, Rebecca realised, something she would not have thought him capable of.
'Why the strange look, Rebecca?' he queried, taking her hand and helping her down from the bus.
'I never had you down as someone who would get along with children,' she reluctantly explained.
Not letting go of her hand, he said, 'I love children; I hope to have my own some day.' A teasing grin spread across his handsome face as he removed his glasses and bent his head down to hers, adding, 'How would you like the job, Rebecca?'
She gasped and pulled her hand from his, a bright tide of red sweeping her delicate features. 'No, thank you,' she muttered, avoiding his eyes, and hastily she began shepherding the boys and girls into some kind of order.
'Embarrassed—a woman of your experience? I wonder why?' His questioning gaze narrowed on her flushed face, and quickly she turned, before he saw more than she wanted him to.
